We’ve all seen the new Ford Mustang that’s being tested with the U.K. police.
Well now it’s sister the Focus RS has joined the battle field.
I think the RS will perform well. Ford has been very much part of any police service up and down the U.K. with the Focus hatchback and estate being ever present.
In an interceptor roll the RS would be ideal were currently Skoda Octavia vRS, BMW 3 and 5 Series, Subaru Impreza and Mitsubishi Evo dominate

Wouldn’t the manual transmission cause issues with policing and chasing criminals?

It never has done in the past.
Manuals are a majority here in the U.K.
Sure there are more and more automatics doing the rounds in police forces but I think that is primarily due to the larger powered Audis and BMWs only having automatics.
Kinja is being an arse again with pictures. Doh.

No, most police cars are manual here, no one over thinks it and thus is just natural for them to drive.

The Mustang looks interesting - it’s a GT, right? But it doesn’t have 5.0 badges on the fenders and it has an Ecoboost hood.

The Mustang at the top is a pre-production GT and will as Ford have said, likely be crushed (though efforts are being made to keep it as a show car). There are a couple of EcoBoost Mustangs being tried out at present and apparently an 'all black' Mustang may get added to the list as an interceptor I guess.

Generally whenever the police are chasing criminals, they aren’t just driving, they’re also working lights, sirens, radio, etc.
It seems like they would be better off without the distraction of shifting, while doing all of that other stuff.

Presently our interceptors are dominated by BMW 3 Series and Audi A4s (I think the Subarus and Mitsubishis are going out of fashion) and Ford has a history with U.K. police from Ford Fiestas, Focus's, Mondeos, Transit Connects, Transit Customs and Transits so it makes sense to lease or take out one big contract rather than some small ones and buy a few ad hock.

My knowledge of UK automotive is limited to Top Gear, so I was under the impression they’re all Volvo V70s and Vauxhall Astra Diesels.

No. That is the beauty of the U.K., you can drive pretty much whatever you want or import whatever you want as long as dual rear indicators (like in the U.S.) are separated, engine timing if required for U.K./Euro fuel ratings, rear foglight, etc...
I can’t post any pictures as kinja is being an arse and I can only upload pictures from my Blackberry.
Here's a good website of emergency vehicles up and down the U.K., Ireland and Gibraltar.

While they’re not the only emergency vehicles around (as Svend said) there are still plenty of Astra diesels and Volvo V70s, so you’re half right.
